Simplicity / Enkelhet

English: In our Bhagavatam studies we have come to a section about simple living.

The message these days have been: The enlightened person should endeavor only for the minimum necessities of life while in the world. He should be intelligently fixed and never endeavor for material things, being competent to perceive practically that all such endeavors are merely hard labor for nothing. When there are ample earthly flats to lie on, what is the necessity of cots and beds? When one can use his own arms, what is the necessity of a pillow? When one can use the palms of his hands, what is the necessity of varieties of utensils? When there is ample covering, or the skins of trees, what is the necessity of clothing?

Although we may not live up to this standard in detail, we can still get the principle. I do wear boxer-shorts, pants and t-shirt, not bark, but still I can understand that material comfort is not the meaning of life.

Svenska: I vår studie av Bhagavatam har vi nu kommit till en sektion om enkelt leverne.

Budskapet dessa dagar har varit: En upplyst person borde inte anstränga sig för mer än vad han behöver för sitt uppehälle medans han befinner sig i världen. Han borde vara intelligent bestämd, och aldrig anstränga sig för materiella saker, då han är kompetent att förstå praktiskt att alla sådana ansträngningar endast är hårt jobb för ingenting. När det finns gott om platt jord att ligga på, varför skulle man behöva säng? När man kan använda sina armar, varför skulle man behöva en kudde? När man har händer, varför skulle man behöva alla möjliga redskap? När det finns gott om bark och annat man kan täcka sig med, varför skulle man behöva kläder?

Även om vi inte lever upp till ovanstående standard i detalj, kan vi ändå förstå principen.
Jag bär kalsonger, byxor och t-shirt, inte bark, men jag kan ändå förstå att materiell komfort inte är meningen med livet.
