To survive progress / Att överleva utveckling

Gopananda Das

English: Guest blog from Gopananda Das, initiated into the gaudiya vaishanva tradition by Srila Tripurari Maharaja in the summer of 2009. He lives in Örebro, where he studies philosophy among other things at the city's university.

---------------------------------------------

Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in his "Also spracht Zarathustra" that God is dead and that the people were the ones that had killed God. What did he mean by that and what can we learn from it?

Nietzsches day was in the late 19th century and the western society had gone through a dramatical change owing to the church's lessened influence on people in society. Now science was in the center and the beginning of the individually focused society we live in today. Man had chosen science before God and the church. In discussions on academic level concerning this statement one can discern three stages of development of the religion. And to explain this as pedagogically as possible I will line them up.

1. People were literalists. If scripture said something, that's how it was. (This was before the time of Nietzsche).
2. People interpreted scripture according to society's development and the environment. (For example, there are a lot of ways to look at why Jesus turned water into wine).
3. Are all the religions going to be mushed together/peter out?

As you can see, the third point is a speculations about what could happen to the world religions in the future. A relevant question that should be asked: How important is the tradition for this not to happen? And suppose that you consider the tradition important, how is the tradition to keep up without being merged with everything else in the future? The problem could be that if we are too progressive and pushing for the development of the tradition we might throw a spanner in the works. According to me we have to find a balance in the relationship between our tradition and the progressive development at large.

Feel free to share your thoughts on this post.
Interesting? Fun? Bad?

Nietzsche

Intressant? Roligt? Dåligt?

  1. These are very interesting thoughts. How to stay true to the tradition and at the same time face all the challenges that every religion has to confront? I totally agree that we have to find a balance between these two. Personally I think that in spiritual process the most important is the essence of the teachings, not the form. So although the form can change throughout the time and there can be some external adjustments the core of the tradition or in other words the substance should be the same. That's way it is so important that the spiritual teacher can recognize and show us the essence of the spiritual process in the ever changing environment. Ultimately if we are being instructed by a saint person who not only knows the spiritual teachings but also live according to them then no matter how the society will change or what challenges the progress will bring we are completely safe.
Very nice article Gopananda Das, keep up the good work:)

Våran tro föds i hjärtat.

  3. Thank you, Ludwig, for sharing these thoughts! The question about continuity and change is quite interesting.

On the other hand, if the essence of tradition is something universal and everlasting, how can it be lost in the long run? Still the question remains: how well are we able to see the essence without being carried away or turned off by externatilities of tradition?

  4. Som Shyamananda sa en gång: "The form is not the essence, but to break the form is also not the essence"

    ärlighet = sanning = krishna.
