Guest blogger: Robin Björkil on vegetarianism / Gästbloggare: Robin Björkil om vegetarism

English: Take life serious - go vegetarian.

Many people have realized the absurdity of killing another living creature.

What is it that makes most of us unwilling to kill?

Can you yourself imagine to see life run out of for example a rabbit, a bird or see a cow taking it's final halting steps trying to maintain its balance while the blood that pulsates out of the throat causes dizziness and confusion.

This is what we create when we buy organic matter from other living creatures to fill our bellies or just eat delicious.

If I say fish stick, do you think of a living fish? If I say kassler, do you think of the pig which had to give up his life? If I say beef mince or peppersteak do you think of the cow which had to crowd in a slaughter transport in its last hours to meet the above mentioned destiny.

I myself have been present during slaughter and have seen the confusion that strikes a living creature when the bolt from a bolt gun goes through the skull and the farmer that you trusted your whole life confirms the death process by cutting of the carotid artery.

In most cases we think it's natural to eat meat, man has eaten meat in all times. Do we then mean that life does not go forward? That there is not a growth and that we should behave like we always have even if it creates suffering for so many others? Moreover, man has been barbaric in all times, we had slave labour, women had no right to vote and 1809 was the last year we had war in Sweden. Shall we continue that as well?

I meet many people who in debates concerning meateating, argues that natives have eaten meat at all times. The native americans ate buffalo and so on. To this I can add that the natives takes care to utilize everything in nature. If they kill a living creature they pray for it and there is a great respect for its spirit. Nothing is wasted, intestines, bones, meat, fur, everthing is used, nothing thrown away. Besides, they perform the killing themselves and take full responsibility for their actions. This you could not claim that you do in the supermarket's meat section. We like to refer to natives in these regards, but do not think of them at all when we go to the bar a saturday night or bury ourselves in our materialistic "needs".

The natives wake up by the sun and begin the day with meditation and prayer a day that aims to fulfill the highest good. Before we ourselves can claim such a lifestyle, claims such as "natives have eaten meat at all times" appears to be nothing else but pure hipocrisy!

There are many claims we make to justify our meat eating. For example that we have meat teeth. I will not go deeply into a debate over this, just allow me to ask a question. When did teeth become a decisive factor for how we are and how we think? We claim to be free beings but in this case the teeth would decide? Living creatures are dying! Living creatures are suffering each second! For every breath we take a being dies for us to be able to eat meat.

Take a deep breath and experience how easy it is to take the air we breathe for granted. That's ok! We are not meant to think all the time about whether we can breathe or not, but it's a fact that the meat industry contributes a lot to the environmental pollution.

In the newspapers of september 2008 you could read that Rajendra Pachauri, 68, chief for UN panel on climate change proposes the following:
-Start by one meat free day a weak and reduce from there. Rajendra Pachauri means that reduced meat consumption gives quick results for the climate.

-It's really the most attractive alternative, he says.

Changing to low energy light bulbs won't do. We need to change our way of living.

To eat vegetarian would mean a great possibility to ward off the climate threat. We have everything to gain from a vegetarian diet. One one hand humanity can survive, and on the other hand we will be more healthy. By the increased global trade, long distances slaughter transports contributes to great envoronmental pollution at same time as we are challenging the resources of the earth for which the third world suffers in first hand, apart from the animals of course.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization released a report in the autumn of 2006 confirming that the cattle raise affects the greenhouse effect mor than boats, airplanes and cars do together. Today's western meat consumption is one of the main reasons to our survival being threatened.

These facts are not spoken of very much. May that be because its easy to change the light bulbs at home and go with public transport instead of car, but that we in the end do not want to make bigger changes in our own lives?

Take life serious! Go vegetarian.

Bli vegetarian.
